Why visit Akagera?

A Big Five park brought back from the brink

Akagera is Rwanda’s only savannah park and the last refuge of savannah-adapted wildlife in the country — 1,122 square kilometres of grassland, acacia woodland and a chain of papyrus-fringed lakes that form the largest protected wetland in central Africa.

Twenty years ago it had lost its lions and much of its wildlife. Since 2010, under a partnership between the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks, it has been fenced, protected and restocked: lions returned in 2015, eastern black rhinos in 2017 and white rhinos in 2021. Today more than 12,000 large animals live here, tourism covers the great majority of the park’s running costs, and you can see all of the Big Five within a two-hour drive of the capital.

🕑 Approx. 4 hours (flight around 1 hour) 📍 From Akagera park-area hotels

Akagera National Park: Hot Air Balloon Flight with Breakfast

The single most memorable thing you can do in Akagera. You lift off at first light, drift silently over the grasslands and the lake chain while the sun comes up over Tanzania, and watch the herds move underneath you — a perspective no game drive gives you. Landing is followed by a full bush breakfast and the traditional celebration. Book it early: flights are weather-dependent and capacity is small.

Akagera 1-Day Safari with Boat Cruise & Park Fees Included

Akagera’s park fees are significant and many day tours quote them separately, so a package that bundles entry, a game drive and the Lake Ihema boat safari into one price is genuinely useful. This one does exactly that. You get the classic southern-sector drive plus an hour on the water among the hippo pods, with nothing left to pay at the gate.

  • Park entry fees included — no surprise costs at the gate
  • Game drive plus a Lake Ihema boat safari in one day
  • Hippos, Nile crocodiles and superb waterbird viewing

Where to go

Akagera’s must-see places

From the hippo-crowded shallows of Lake Ihema to the lion country of the northern plains — here is where to point your vehicle, and why.

Wide view over Lake Ihema in Akagera National Park at golden hour Lakes & wetlands

Lake Ihema

Hippos, crocodiles and Rwanda’s best boat safari

The largest of Akagera’s lakes and the second-largest in Rwanda, Lake Ihema is where the park’s signature boat safari sets off — an hour among snorting hippo pods, basking Nile crocodiles and papyrus fringes alive with fish eagles and kingfishers.

Open savannah grassland stretching to the hills in Akagera National Park Savannah & hills

Kilala Plain

Open northern grassland — the park’s prime big-game country

Wide, almost treeless grassland in the north of Akagera where the park’s biggest herds gather. This is where lion sightings, big buffalo herds and elephant come together on one horizon — the most classically "African savannah" landscape in Rwanda.

Mutumba Hills

The viewpoint that puts the whole park at your feet

A ridge of rolling hills in the north of Akagera topped by a campsite and a panorama that stretches over the plains to the Akagera River and Tanzania beyond. The best sunrise and sunset spot in the park, and a fine place to camp.

Lake Rwanyakizinga

Elephant country in the far north

The northernmost lake in the Akagera chain, ringed by grassland and best known for the elephant herds that come down to drink and bathe. Quiet, remote and home to the park’s most exclusive tented camp.

Reed-fringed lake shore in the southern sector of Akagera National Park Lakes & wetlands

Lake Shakani

Lakeside camping, fishing and hippos at bedtime

A small, reed-fringed lake in Akagera’s south with an unfenced public campsite right on the water — the place to fall asleep to hippos grunting a few metres away and wake up to fish eagles calling.

Good to know

Visiting Akagera: your questions answered

Frequently asked questions

Is Akagera National Park worth visiting?

Yes — and increasingly so. Akagera is Rwanda's only Big Five park, it is an easy 2.5-hour drive from Kigali, and it is far less crowded than the big East African reserves. Its conservation story, from near-collapse to a self-financing fenced park with lions and rhinos, is genuinely remarkable. Compare the best safaris here.

How much does it cost to visit Akagera National Park?

Park entry for non-resident international visitors is around US$100 per person per day in high season, with lower rates for East African residents and Rwandan citizens. Add roughly US$45–55 for the Lake Ihema boat safari and about US$50 for a night drive. Most organised day trips from Kigali start around US$180–260 per person including transport and a guide — see our full breakdown of costs.

Can you see the Big Five in Akagera?

All five are present: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros. Buffalo and elephant are seen on most game drives, lions are realistic with an early start in the northern sector, and rhino and leopard sightings are genuine bonuses rather than expectations. A two-day safari improves your odds considerably over a single day.

How far is Akagera from Kigali?

The park's southern gate is about 110 km east of Kigali — roughly 2.5 hours by road on good tarmac. The northern Mutumba gate takes closer to 3.5–4 hours. See our Kigali to Akagera guide for every route, price and timing.

Do I need to book Akagera safaris in advance?

In the peak dry months (June to September, and December to February) the best-rated guides and the in-park lodges sell out weeks ahead, so booking early matters. Most safaris on GetYourGuide offer free cancellation and reserve-now-pay-later, so there is little risk in locking in your dates.

How many days do you need in Akagera?

One long day from Kigali covers the southern lakes, a boat safari and a good chunk of the game viewing. Two days lets you reach the northern plains where the lions are, and adds a dawn game drive — the single biggest upgrade you can make. Three days suits photographers and birders.
